I'm only 11 weeks old and just had my second vaccination.
I still cant do walks, as the suggestion of the vet, so my mom has taught me to poo on a selected spot indoors but lately I've been naughty and bring my poop out of the poop place.
Why do i do that?

improvements and pics [Jul. 3rd, 2009|06:45 pm]
Maltese Dogs

Hello everyone.

Anyway, I asked some training questions earlier, and my doggy's improving a lot, he's so smart!

Right now, he knows where to pee and poo and so when I'm at work I can leave him out in our main living room (which is wood floored) to roam all day without worrying about him peeing anywhere anymore. He also knows "sit" and "down" although sometimes he needs to be reminded. Also, since he's free to roam in our living room during the day, it's easier to get him into his crate at night for bedtime and he rarely scratches anymore at night.

So now the main thing we still need to work on is walking on a leash, because he is still impulsive and excitable, but we're working on that. Also, what other commands are good to know next other than sit and down?

And now, so that the post isn't only text, here's a few cute pictures of him I took recently:

A few questions [Jun. 16th, 2009|04:32 pm]
Maltese Dogs

So I've had my dog for about 2 and a half weeks now, and although he's improving in a lot of ways, there are some parts we need work on. He was a rescue, and about 1-2 years old, but I have no idea what his previous training or family was like.

Anyway, first thing is potty training, which is going relatively well. Most of the time he pees and poops whenever we put him in the bathroom on the pee pads. Sometimes he takes longer, but it is mostly ok. We put him in the morning right after taking him out of his crate, right after breakfast, right after we get home from work, and right after dinner. Only thing is that we are trying to associate the peepads with peeing, and trying to train him to go there by himself, but sometimes he can't hold his pee so right after drinking we'd try to coax him to the bathroom but sometimes he can't hold it and pees there.

Another side note about peepads - not sure if we just have really crappy peepads or not, but sometimes he pees and after that, he steps in the pee, and tracks pee footprints in the house, because we have a wooden floor. So, whenever we do train him to go on peepads by himself and leave him out of his crate, we're afraid he's goign to track peeprints all over the house anyway.

Okay, next question. He scratches the crate at night when we're trying to sleep. We try to ignore it, and it comes and goes, but if we have to go to the bathroom, which means walking by his crate, he'll start scratching very loud again. We live in an apartment so we're afraid his scratching is a nuisance to the neighbors. How can we get him to stop? We've been doing the ignoring him until he's quiet and then try to treat, but as soon as we get close to the crate he starts scratching again. Getting him INTO the crate is easy, just point to it, say "Crate", and treat, but getting him to remain quiet in there is a different story.

Last question: Leash training. He's very impulsive and excitable, and doesn't walk on a leash well. He wants to run around and often tangles the cord around me, and doesn't walk in the straight line, just wherever he wants to run or sniff things. Any suggestions there? We've tried to tell him to sit, which he eventually does after a lot of reminding, but he doesn't stay sitting very long because he always wants to jump up and go somewhere, and not be patient.

new doggy! [Jun. 1st, 2009|07:00 pm]
Maltese Dogs

Today we got a doggy! He was rescued from the shelter by a vet, and we adopted him. He's very calm but yet fun loving for the few hours we've had it. We had to journey a long bus ride to take him home, but it's worth it. He's very sweet, he's already made himself home at our apartment and loves to fetch his toys and just relax in our laps. The only thing he needs work in is to be housetrained.

So, here are some pictures of the cutie!

Any suggestions for names?

Also, any tips on housetraining him? He's already peed on our floor a ton of times.

FINALLY [Dec. 6th, 2008|01:13 pm]
Maltese Dogs

We finally figured it out! The snuggly warm dog hat and scarf is finally here! After some long, hard, tedious work, we finally got them past production! We made them in 3 sizes, XS, SM, M/L. We're also almost done with the slotted hats for the ears to poke out of. I'll post images of those when they're finally ready as well!

Thanks everyone for all the feedback and suggestions! You flippin' ROCK!

I thought this group could use some updating... [Nov. 23rd, 2008|01:45 am]

Meet Brocky, my 1 year and 4 month old Maltese.  He's fully grown and just hit 5lbs exactly, so he's a little on the smaller side.  He's my first Maltese, I grew up with cocker spaniels and labs.  He's just about perfect.  I love the breed and I'd back the breeder up to anyone looking in the northern Cali area.  I actually found the breeder after getting some advice from this lj group, so thanks to the people that helped me out!  Anyway, I'm in a lot of the pictures, sorry.  A lot of my favorite pictures just had me in them.

Also, I need advice from my fellow Maltese owners.  My Brocky has been very healthy, he's gotten all of his shots and he's neutered.  But he's not even 1 1/2 yet and he's already having teeth problems.  I brush them about once a week since I noticed this problem like 6 months ago, but I'm still worried.  I feel like they're rotting and I am planning on talking to my vet again about this since last time they just advised me to brush them.  But I know this is a common problem in their breed and I wanted to know if anyone else had the same problem and was able to solve it.  Any advice would be appreciated.  I don't want him to be toothless at 3 years old.  He's my baby.

Oh, and, people need to post more pictures.  Maltese are now my favorite little doggies ever and I 'd love to see all your babies.
